Targeting the gut microbiota to tackle metabolic disorders associated with obesity and diabetes

Our online conference will take place in less than one month (September 30th), a unique occasion to hear Prof. Patrice Cani on the discover of the beneficial role of the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila on obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors, and more recently, the isolation and the characterization of a new promising bacterium Dysosmobacter welbionis.

Synopsis

Obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are worldwide epidemic. Over the last 20 years, we have investigated the role of the gut microbiota in this context. For instance, we discovered that the gut microbiota was involved in the onset of inflammation (metabolic endotoxemia) and gut barrier dysfunction in obese and diabetic subjects.

In a series of preclinical studies, we found that the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila could play a major role on host health (e.g.; energy, glucose, lipid metabolism). Therefore, translating these exciting observations to human was the next logic step. By conducting a randomized double-blind placebo controlled exploratory study we found that the administration of Akkermansia muciniphila was safe in humans and induced beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors.

The presentation will cover how we moved "from correlation to causation" and eventually highlighting the exciting journey of Akkermansia muciniphila to go from mice to humans. Do you want to learn more about this great discover ? Come and assist the high-level conference on 30th September at 10a.m. CET.
